La Laura és una noia de Barcelona , molt il·lusionada quan es casa amb Tomàs, un ric hereu de la població de Comarquinal, l’hereu dels Muntanyola. Tot i així la noia és rebuda amb menyspreu per la Teresa , germana d’en Tomàs, ja que fins aquell moment ella actuava com la senyora de la casa i ara arribava una estrangera que ocuparia aquest lloc .
La il·lusió del primer moment es va esvaint , veient com és el seu nou marit ,i tot i que ella es proposa fer-lo canviar , molt aviat s’adona que això no és possible . La població de Comarquinal, un món rural i reprimit , tampoc veu amb bons ulls a la nouvinguda només pel sol fet de ser de Barcelona que es veu com un cau de vici i pecat.
La incomprensió que sent la Laura per part de tothom provoca que en conèixer el jove advocat Pere Gifreda, amb qui comparteix certes afinitats, l’idealitzi si bé més tard s’adona que no és el marit ideal.

Ens mostra les diferències entre el món rural i el de la ciutat , i com els personatges veuen en la ciutat un món de perdició i vici, i no de llibertat.
